Use of a Whiteboard in REBT

 

One of the drawbacks to teaching Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) strictly by way of teletherapy is that I’ve not incorporated use of a whiteboard or blackboard when teaching clients about rational concepts – as suggested on page 210 of The REBT Therapist’s Pocket Companion.

 

Although I could modify my online setup to include use of such instruments, I’ve chosen not to do so for the time being. Nevertheless, I appreciate that other REBT practitioners utilize such helpful tools. Perhaps one of my go-to online sources for visual material relates to the content of Walter J. Matweychuk, Ph.D. (REBTDoctor).

 

Dr. Matweychuk has many videos demonstrating how he uses REBT and some of his content features whiteboard illustrations. As an example, consider the following image captured from his website:

The featured whiteboard addresses goals, the ABC model, unconditional acceptance, realism, desire, the difference between unhealthy and healthy negative emotions, and other ratonal concepts. While I favor a kinesthetic learning style, I’m also prone to visual learning.

 

Therefore, while I don’t make use of a whiteboard in REBT, I value that other REBT practitioners do. If you have a moment, perhaps you could check out content from the REBTDoctor. (I’m not affiliated with Dr. Matweychuk, though I appreciate his work.)
