Point 'Em Out

Writer: Deric HollingsDeric Hollings

On their 2001 album Put Yo Hood Up, rappers Lil Jon and The East Side Boyz featured a track entitled “I Like Dem Girlz” that included a theme from electronic dance music (EDM) DJ Frank Ski’s “Whores in This House” (1993). I enjoyed both songs during my time in the Marine Corps.

Lyrics of the former track include, “It’s some hoes in this house, if you see ‘em, point ‘em out.” Sampling a similar theme, hip hop producer and rapper Juicy J and lyricist Remy Ma released “Point ‘Em Out” which was featured on Juicy J’s album Ravenite Social Club (2024).

Lyrics include, “Real bitches […], fake bitches […], goofy bitches […], hood bitches […], official bitches […], pretty bitches, when you see ‘em, point ‘em out.” Both “I Like Dem Girlz” and “Point ‘Em Out” relate to identifying specific people and then making their presence known.

For instance, when I was assigned to the Marine Security Guard (MSG) detachment in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, I learned that women who exhibited sexually promiscuous behavior were referred to as “piranhas.” When they visited the MSG house, “Whores in This House” was played.

Although admittedly a crude comparison, I think of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) in this regard. In particular, I consider the ABC model which posits that when an Action occurs and you use an unhelpful Belief about it, it’s your assumption that causes a Consequence.

Such unpleasant outcomes include cognitive, emotive, sensational, and behavioral experiences which relate to self-disturbance rather than mere distress. Rather than experiencing self-upset, REBT uses Disputation of unfavorable attitudes in order to explore Effective new beliefs.

Noteworthy, when providing psychoeducational lessons about the REBT, I find it useful to offer humorous, crass, or otherwise memorable examples which may be remembered more so than boring instructions about mental, emotional, and behavioral health.

Thus, I invite you to consider a “point ‘em out” strategy when using disputation. Searching for, identifying, and then making it well-known what unhelpful beliefs are causing your unpleasant consequences is what this approach to wellness is all about.

In closing, the next time you’re aware that you feel unwell (e.g., angry and with a rapid heartrate) while behaving in an unproductive manner (e.g., arguing with other people), you could then explore what unfavorable beliefs you’re likely using. If you see ‘em, point ‘em out!
