When practicing Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), I listen closely for the Actions, Beliefs, and Consequences of the ABC model, in accordance with direction from page 68 of The REBT Therapist’s Pocket Companion. Here’s how this model works:
Activating event (“Actions”) – What occurred
Belief about the event – What you told yourself about (A) that resulted in (C)
Consequence of one’s belief about the event – What you felt (emotion or bodily sensation) about what happened and what you did (behavior)
Disputation of the self-disturbing belief about the event – How you might challenge (D) what you told yourself (B) and which led to (C)
Effective new belief to replace the self-disturbing belief – What effective new conclusion you can tell yourself rather than using unhelpful or unhealthy narratives (B)
Once the Action is clearly described and an unhelpful Belief is made apparent, then the emotional, bodily sensation, and behavioral Consequences of the unproductive assumption are demonstrated to form a Belief-Consequence connection of self-disturbance.
With the client, I can then assist in Disputation of the unhelpful Belief so that an Effective new conclusion may be achieved. With the more productive assumption, a client can then apply similar belief adaptation to future events.
Although this is a fairly simple technique to learn and understand, it requires belief and practice in order to consistently produce desired results which may better serve a person’s interests and goals. Would you like to know more about how to listen for the ABCs in your own life, so that you may reduce your level of self-disturbance?
