About a Light Switch

When providing psychoeducational lessons about Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), I often use syllogisms to demonstrate thoughts and beliefs which are rational (in accordance with both logic and reason) or irrational. As an example, consider the following rational example:

 

Form (constructive dilemma) –

If p, then q; and if r, then s; but either p or r; therefore, either q or s.

 

Example –

If a light switch is up, then the light is on. And if a light switch is down, then the light is off. But either a light switch is up or a light switch is down. Therefore, either the light is on or the light is off.

 

While I generally tend to abstain from use of binary propositional statements, some matters do come down to a this-or-that conclusion (the current sentence as a case in point).Now, consider the following illustrative example regarding care for mental, emotional, and behavioral health:

 

Form (constructive dilemma) –

If p, then q; and if r, then s; but either p or r; therefore, either q or s.

 

Example –

If you practice REBT, then you may actually get better. And if you use a different psychotherapeutic modality, then you may merely feel better. But either you practice REBT or you use a different psychotherapeutic modality. Therefore, you may actually get better or you may merely feel better.

 

If you understand the utility of a constructive dilemma syllogism about a light switch, then you likely comprehend use of this rational construct in regard to use of REBT. Admittedly, the current blogpost is designed merely to demonstrate how basic logic and reason apply.
