Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) posits that when an Action occurs and a person Believes something unhelpful about the event, the assumption and not the occurrence is what results in an unpleasant cognitive, emotive, bodily sensation, or behavioral Consequence.
This A-B-C interplay is demonstrated by use of the ABC model:
Activating event (“Action”) – What occurred
Belief about the event – What you told yourself about (A) that resulted in (C)
Consequence of one’s belief about the event – What you felt (emotion or bodily sensation) about what happened and what you did (behavior)
Disputation of the self-disturbing belief about the event – How you might challenge (D) what you told yourself (B) and which led to (C)
Effective new belief to replace the self-disturbing belief – What effective new conclusion you can tell yourself rather than using unhelpful or unhealthy narratives (B)
Because the use of humor is an effective component of REBT practice, I sometimes invite people to switch “Belief” with “Bullshit” and “Consequence” with “Crappy.” In this way, the Bullshit we tell ourselves will lead to a Crappy outcome.
Without disputing unhelpful assumptions which create a Bullshit-Crappy connection, we tend to make a messy situation of life. If you choose not to challenge your unfavorable assumptions, I hope you have plenty of toilet paper to deal with the mess that will inevitably result.
